geisha_costumesHalloween is a Western tradition, but the funny thing about it is that it has changed so much from its roots.  Originally meant as a time of year to teach the younger ones about the paranormal, it has now become the time of year to get dressed up in various costumes and have fun.  When we say “various”, we mean various.  Costumes are no longer limited to the creepy or spooky, though they are always popular.

Asian dress sensibilities have come into favor, especially for female costumes.  The Japanese kimono in particular is a favorite costume basis, evocative of a geisha or empress from Tokyo.  Of course, some warrior classes had their own variants of kimono too.

A little girl who wants to look like a princess from Asia would fall in love with the Asian Princess Child Costume.  A quality product in cherry blossom pink, it has flower and vine prints all across.  It also has long drooping cuffs reminiscent of the furisode style of kimonos in Japan.  The wide sash at the abdomen comes attached, to make putting the costume on a little easier.  Traditional kimonos take a long time to put on, but this little number won’t be that much trouble for your children.

kimono_costumesThe Geisha Plus Adult is a plus size, full-length kimono for women in red, rich with gold prints.  The fan and wig come with the costume, but actual fan design may vary from the one on the site.  With this costume, you can make yourself out as a matron of the East.

A teen or younger woman would have no trouble picking out a kimono-styled costume.  More popular among the young crowd are the shorter-cut kimonos rather than the full-length types.  The Dragon Geisha Young Adult Costume is a prime example.  The front is cut short like a mini-skirt, while the back features a longer piece of cloth that drapes down to the ankle.  The bi-level look is very cool, and the bright blue hue alongside black trim is a statement in itself.  Full but not encumbering sleeves and an obi complete the dress.  A fan and chopsticks come with the costume; in this case, the chopsticks are for fixing hair, not really for eating.  The dragon emblazoned on the front says something too.

kimono_geisha_halloween_costumesThe Lovely Lolita Adult Costume straddles the line between the traditional cut and modern sensibilities. It comes in a very royal-looking purple with floral prints.  The sleeves are long and full, with swinging sleeves similar to the furisode style.  The lower part of the kimono is short and comes with attached black ruffles, for “skirt” fullness so associated with the gothic look.  Grab a paper umbrella to keep it in character. Don’t forget your dramatic eye makeup!  Fanboys will not be able to stop staring at you!

An ultra-modern take on the kimono, the Tokyo Pop Princess Adult costume is designed with hip and trendy in mind.  This special number features a sleeveless kimono, closed with a laced-up obi.  A length of cloth also extends down the back, from waist level to about mid-calf.  The long, full sleeves come detached, and are fastened to the arm with a long ribbon on each side.   The cloth is black with dragon and phoenix prints, trimmed in that bright blue.  Everything about this seems to spite and at the same time pay respect to the traditional Japanese dress.  Complete the look with some trendy hair accessories, and you are ready to rock the Budokan!

If you really want to capture that old-school geisha look, then go for the more traditional cuts and get the appropriate wig.  Otherwise, a modern girl would not be disappointed with these choices.  You might have trouble keeping the boys away when wearing one of these kimono costumes, but that’s kind of the point, right?  Head over to BuyCostumes.com for previews and orders.  Keep an eye out for interesting accessories while you’re on the site too!
